Leh-Ladakh is a high-altitude, dry region situated to the north of India, in the state of Jammu & Kashmir (now in the Union Territory of Ladakh). Situated between the mountain range of the Himalayas and the Karakoram range, Leh is a sizeable town and the capital of Ladakh. The history of Ladakh dates back to the 1st century BC, and the region was a hub of trade and Buddhism. It was under the Tibetan Kingdom and has had centuries of cultural and religious connections with Tibet. The early rulers of Ladakh were Tibetan Buddhists and the culture has developed since then with both Tibetan and Indian influences.
